Folding Bow Saw

A bow saw cuts faster than a pocket saw because the frame keeps a long blade tight. The trouble is carrying one. This one folds down to a flat bar with the blade covered by the frame, and slides into its own pouch. It is about 13 in across when open and weighs 6.8 oz, a light pack saw for branches and small firewood.

How many

Each saw comes with its own storage pouch. The two saws may arrive in separate packages.

A bow saw that packs flat

A real saw frame, folded into a pouch.

Unfold it and the aluminum frame pulls the blade tight, the way a full-size bow saw does. Fold it and the blade sits inside the frame, out of the way of your hands and your gear. It weighs about as much as a phone.

How it is built

Three bars, one blade, no loose parts.

The frame is three aluminum bars hinged together, with the blade as the fourth side. A snap ring holds the free end of the blade when the saw is open. Nothing comes apart to pack it, so there is nothing to lose at the campsite.

  • Staggered teeth

The maker describes a mix of fishtail and triangular teeth set in a staggered row, meant for both green and dry wood.

  • Aluminum frame

Light for its size. The maker says the parts of the frame can be removed and replaced.

  • A sleeve on the handle

The bar you grip has a nylon sleeve over the metal.

  • Blade covered when folded

Folded, the blade lies inside the frame, and the whole bar goes into the pouch.

Materials are as the maker names them. We have not checked them ourselves.

How to use it

Unfold, hook the blade, cut.

Six steps for unfolding the saw into its bow shape
  1. Unfold the frame

Take the folded bar out of the pouch and swing the end bars out, as in steps 1 to 3 of the maker's drawing.

  2. Hook the blade

Bring the free end of the blade to the snap ring on the last bar and close the frame into its bow shape, steps 4 to 6. The frame pulls the blade tight.

  3. Cut, then fold it back

Use long, even strokes and let the teeth do the work. When you are done, unhook the blade, fold the frame over it and slide it into the pouch.

The maker notes that the catch is a little tight the first time you set the saw up. Keep your fingers clear of the teeth while you hook the blade, and fold the saw before it goes back in the pouch.
