Folds shut, rides in a pocket
Stripping a wire, snipping a cable tie, crimping a spade terminal, bending a hook to go under a terminal screw — four jobs that usually mean four tools on the floor around you. This is those jobs in one 22 cm (8.66 in) pair of pliers, and when you are done the handles fold up around the jaws to about palm size.
22 cm open
8.66 in — full-size leverage, not a keyring tool
About 10 cm folded
Around 4 in — tool pouch, glovebox or jacket pocket
Quenched, forged steel
Hardened jaws, stainless body
Spring inside the joint
Opens itself between cuts, so one hand does the work
What it actually does
Strip. A row of sized holes takes the insulation off without biting the copper — as long as the hole matches the wire. Cut. A shear edge for wire and cable ties, plus threaded holes for trimming small bolts from M2.5 to M4. Crimp. A terminal jaw for insulated spade and ring terminals. Wind. The rounded nose bends a clean hook in solid wire so it sits under a terminal screw instead of splaying out.
Around those sit the smaller tricks — splitting a two-core cable, pressing a wire flat, gripping a screw cap, 6 mm and 10 mm nut notches, a hook for pulling cable. That is where the eighteen in the name comes from.
The part nobody tells you
Every multi-tool in this category counts generously. Stripping several wire sizes is counted as several functions; cutting and shearing are two. Take out the overlap and you have a tool that strips, cuts, crimps, bends and grips — five real jobs, in one pair that folds into a pocket.
What it is not is a substitute for the dedicated tools at the extremes. A ratcheting crimper sets a heavy lug on thick cable properly; this does not. Lineman's pliers cut steel wire all day; this will mark its jaws if you try. Buy it because one tool in a pocket beats four in a bag, not because it replaces a bench full of kit.
And the folding joint is the honest trade. It is what makes the tool pocketable, and no folding pivot is as rigid as a solid one. Squeeze in line with the handles and let the jaws do the work; do not lever sideways on a stuck fitting.
Straight answers
These handles are not insulated for live work. They are non-slip grips, not VDE-rated 1000 V insulation, and nothing in the specification says otherwise. Turn the circuit off and test it dead before you touch it, the same as you would with any uninsulated tool.
Match the hole to the wire. The stripping holes are sized. Use one that is too small and you nick the conductor, which is the most common way a wire fails months later at a terminal. Start a size large and work down.
Fold it before it goes in the pocket. Folded, the jaws sit between the handles. Dropping it open into a tool bag is how a shear edge gets chipped, and a chipped edge crushes rather than cuts.
The specifics
Questions people ask
No. The grips are non-slip plastic, not certified insulation, and no voltage rating is published for them. Treat it as an uninsulated hand tool: switch off, test dead, then work.
The sizes are stamped next to the holes. In the maker's photos one face reads 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8 — AWG gauges — and the other reads 0.8 to 2.6 mm. There is no separate size table, so try the hole on a scrap end before you strip the run you care about.
Not if the hole matches the wire. Nicked strands come from forcing a thick wire into a hole that is too small. If in doubt, step up a size — the insulation still pulls off cleanly.
For insulated spade and ring terminals on light-gauge wire, the crimp jaw closes the barrel. Give every crimp a firm tug before you trust it. For heavy lugs on thick cable, use a ratcheting crimper — a plier crimp on a big lug can look right and still heat up later.
Squeezed in line with the handles, which is how pliers are meant to be used, yes. No folding pivot is as rigid as a fixed one under sideways force, though. If your work is mostly levering and twisting, a fixed pair of lineman's pliers is the better buy.
Bending a hook in solid wire so it seats under a terminal screw. A hooked end tightens down evenly; a straight end squeezes out sideways and ends up half-clamped, which is how loose terminals happen.
Either hand. The handles are straight, with no shaped thumb rest favouring one side.
None is listed — plan on the tool only. It folds small enough to sit in a pouch pocket or a jacket, which is rather the point.
