Put it down, find it later

The bolt does not roll away this time.

Every job that comes apart produces a handful of small steel: bolts, washers, clips, the one screw that holds the whole panel on. Put them on a bench and they roll. Put them on a fender and they slide off. This mat sticks to any steel surface you are already working next to, and everything ferrous you drop on it stays where you dropped it — even when the mat is vertical.

Magnetic both ways

It grips the surface, and it grips your parts

The magnet runs through the whole pad, so it works in both directions at once. The back holds the mat onto a toolbox, a car door, a fender, a wing, a workbench leg — anything steel. The face holds whatever ferrous hardware you set down on it.

That is what lets you use it standing up. Slap it on the side of the car you are working on, at eye level, and your fasteners are in reach instead of in the gravel.

Three-piece set with all measurements: 32 by 24 cm, 32 by 10 cm and 11 by 11 cm

Three shapes, three jobs

The shape matters more than the area

Large — 32 × 24 cm (12.8 × 9.6 in). The one you strip a whole assembly onto. Room to lay parts out in the order they came off.

Strip — 32 × 10 cm (12.8 × 4.1 in). Long and narrow, so it fits along a door frame, a wing edge or the lip of a toolbox drawer without hanging over.

Small — 11 × 11 cm (4.3 × 4.3 in). Sticks anywhere. This is the one that goes right next to your hands for the four screws you just took out.

Used together they work as a system: strip down the assembly onto the large mat, keep the fasteners for the part in your hand on the small one.

Textured, non-slip face

Even the parts a magnet cannot hold — aluminium fittings, plastic clips, rubber grommets — sit on the grain instead of sliding.

Bound edge

The rim is stitched in fabric binding rather than cut raw, which is the edge that normally frays first on a mat like this.

Flat and thin

Flexible enough to sit against a curved wing, thin enough to live in the lid of a toolbox rather than take up a drawer.

Ratchet, spanners, sockets, bolts and bits laid out in rows on the large mat

Pick your trim

The colour is the point, not decoration

The face is black on every version — that is what makes a silver washer easy to spot. The binding is what changes. Buy the mats singly and they come with red binding; the three colours below are choices on the 3-piece set.

Three-piece magnetic tool mat set with orange binding

Orange binding

The loudest of the three against a dark engine bay or a black toolbox.

Three-piece magnetic tool mat set with blue binding

Blue binding

Quieter. Reads as a tool rather than as safety kit, if the mat lives on a bench indoors.

Four use scenarios: car repair, steel structure work, machine shop and home workshop

Where it earns its place

Anywhere you take steel apart

  • Under the hood — stick it to the wing and the bolts stop disappearing into the engine bay.
  • Brakes and suspension — the small mat goes on the wheel arch, right where you are working.
  • Appliance and machine repair — the back panel comes off with fourteen screws and they all go back.
  • Motorbike and bicycle work — the frame itself is the surface you stick it to.
  • Flat-pack and shelving — sort the cam bolts once instead of counting them three times.

Before you buy

Three things we would rather you knew now

Only ferrous metal sticks. Steel and iron fasteners hold. Aluminium, brass, copper and most stainless grades are not magnetic and will simply rest on the textured face. That is physics, not a fault in the mat — but it is worth knowing before you tip a tray of stainless fittings onto it and turn it sideways.

The manufacturer does not publish a pull strength. There is no gauss figure or hold rating on this product, so we are not going to print one. What we can say from the photos and from handling it: sockets, spanners, bolts and bits stay put on a vertical mat. A full-size breaker bar is asking too much of any magnetic pad.

Keep it away from cards and drives. This is a real magnet across its whole area. Credit cards, hotel keycards, mechanical hard drives, hearing aids and pacemakers do not belong near it.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Will it stick to my car?

To the steel parts, yes — doors, wings, bonnet, boot lid, the toolbox next to you. Many modern cars use aluminium bonnets and panels, and no magnet holds on those. If a fridge magnet sticks there, this will.

Will it scratch the paint?

The back is soft-faced rather than bare magnet, so on clean paint it sits without marking. Grit is the real risk with anything you press against bodywork: wipe both the panel and the back of the mat before you stick it on, and do not slide it around once it is down.

Can I use it flat on a bench?

Yes, and that is how most people use it. On a wooden bench the magnet does nothing for the mat itself, but it still holds your fasteners on the face, and the textured surface stops anything rolling to the floor.

Does it hold a screwdriver or a wrench, not just screws?

Hand tools of normal weight stay on it, including on a vertical surface — spanners, ratchets, screwdrivers, pliers. The heavier the tool and the smaller its contact area, the more likely it is to creep. Big breaker bars and impact sockets belong on the bench.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a rag. Oil and brake cleaner are what it will meet in real use; wipe those off rather than letting them sit, and do not put the mat in a washing machine.

Will the magnet weaken over time?

Permanent magnets lose strength very slowly under normal use. What actually kills them is heat and hard knocks — do not leave it on a hot exhaust manifold or an engine block that has just been running.
