Mini Water Pump Pliers

A pair of adjustable pliers small enough to lie across your palm. Press the button on the joint, slide the jaw to the size in front of you, let go, and it stays there. It comes with one of two heads: toothed jaws that bite round stock and worn fasteners, or smooth parallel jaws that hold a nut by its flats and have no teeth to mark it. They do different jobs, so the set we recommend is one toothed and one smooth, both in the same finish.

Finish

Silver finish. In the maker's photos the toothed tool in silver has a blue button and the smooth one a red button, so we cannot promise the button color on this finish.

Which jaws

The two heads are two different tools. Toothed jaws dig in, so they hold round and damaged things and leave marks. Smooth jaws have no teeth, so they suit nuts and finished fittings and tend to slip on anything round. One of each covers both. The first photo shows the smooth-jaw tool in black and in silver; the toothed tool is in photos 7 and 9.

The pliers that live in a pocket

One button sets the jaw.

Full-size water pump pliers stay in the toolbox because they are full size. This one is the 4 inch size, so it goes where you go. Press the button, slide the jaw to fit, let go and squeeze. Pick teeth that bite, smooth faces with no teeth, or carry one toothed and one smooth.

Two heads

They look alike. They are not the same tool.

Both adjust with the same push button, and from the handle side you could mix them up. The difference is at the business end. One head has teeth on both jaws. The other has two flat faces that stay parallel as they close. The picture shows the two in silver, toothed on the left and smooth on the right: those are the two tools you get with Both types in silver.

  • Toothed jaws bite

Teeth dig into whatever is between them. That is what you want on round stock, the hook end of a spring or a rounded-off bolt head, and what you do not want on chrome.

  • Smooth jaws sit flat

Two flat faces close on two flats of a nut the way a small adjustable wrench does. There are no teeth to bite into a finished fitting. On anything round they tend to slip.

  • One joint for both

Either head adjusts the same way: a round push button on the joint and a toothed slot behind it. Press, slide the jaw, let go.

The maker publishes no jaw capacity and no count of positions for either head.

The specifics

What is published, and what is not

The maker gives very little: a length, a steel and two finishes. We print those, and we say plainly where a figure you might want does not exist, instead of filling the gap with a guess.

Where it earns its keep

Small enough to have with you

A tool this size is not for the big jobs. It is for the fastener you meet when the toolbox is somewhere else.

The silver pliers being slipped into a pants pocket

In a pocket

The maker shows it going into a pants pocket, and for a 4 inch tool that is the point. It is on you when the full-size pair is back in the garage.

The silver pliers lying across an open palm

Across a palm

It lies across an open hand. Handles this short give modest leverage, so think of it as a holder and a turner of small things, not a breaker of stuck ones.

The black pliers with smooth jaws on a rusted nut, held in one hand

On a nut, by its flats

Smooth jaws close on two flats of a hex nut the way a small wrench does. If the corners are already gone, that is a job for the toothed head instead.

A silver pair and a black pair held together in one hand

Silver or black

The finish changes nothing about how it works. Pick the one you will find fastest at the bottom of a bag, and take one of each head in it if you want both.

Setting the jaw

Press, slide, let go.

Three photos of the adjustment: thumb on the button, the jaw slid wide open, and the jaw staying wide after the button is released
  1. Press the button

The round button on the joint frees the moving jaw. Hold it down with your thumb.

  2. Slide the jaw to the work

With the button held, slide the jaw along the slot until the jaws are just wider than the part. The slot is toothed on both edges. The maker does not say how many positions it has.

  3. Let go, then squeeze

Release the button and the jaw stays where you left it. Close your hand and the jaws come together on the part.

That is everything the maker's own three photographs show. No force figure is published for this tool, so it is for holding and turning by hand, not for a length of pipe over the handles.

Toothed, smooth, or both

Each head is good at what the other is bad at.

Teeth grip by digging in. Smooth faces grip by sitting flat. Whichever single head you buy, there is a kind of job it does poorly.

What each head suits follows from its shape. The maker publishes no test of either. Buying both costs less than the two on their own and is the one option on this page that passes the $49 free shipping line.

Free shipping on orders of $49 or more. Below that, standard shipping is a flat $4.95 to any of the 50 US states. Delivery takes 7–15 business days from the time you order, and that window already includes the 1–2 business days we take to process. Shipping & Delivery.

30 days from delivery. Email support@nexuratool.com with your order number and what you want to return. We reply with a return address — do not send anything back before you have it, or we cannot match the parcel to your order.

What we can take back: unused items in their original, undamaged packaging. Adhesives, sealants and lubricants cannot be returned once opened; the same goes for any item with a broken safety seal. That is a safety and hazardous-goods rule, not a preference.

Who pays: return shipping is paid by you, except when the item arrived damaged, faulty or was not what you ordered — then we cover it and refund the original shipping too.
