Rechargeable COB headlamp on its elastic strap, spot LED and COB flood strip
Rechargeable COB Headlamp — Spot + Flood Beams, Magnetic Body, 68 g
Regular price $14.95

Light where you are looking

A spot beam for the path, a flood strip for your hands.

Most cheap headlamps give you one beam, and it is usually the wrong one. This has two: a small spot LED for looking down the road or across the yard, and a wide COB strip for the thing at arm’s length — a fuse box, a bike chain, a knot at the end of a line. One button switches between them, and the whole head tilts down so the light lands on your hands instead of the fence.

How it works

One button, and everything else is a twist

Press the button to cycle the spot LED and the COB strip. Hold it for about three seconds and the brightness steps down, so you are not blinding the person across the table when all you need is enough light to read a label.

The head pivots on the bracket — the maker says it swings down through about 90° — and the strap runs through a buckle you can pull tight one-handed. There is no separate mode button and no menu to learn.

The magnet disc in the tail of the headlamp, and the lamp held on a steel pipe

The part people keep it for

Take it off your head and stick it to the job

The lamp body lifts out of the strap bracket, and the whole tail cap is a magnet disc. Put it on the underside of a car bonnet, the side of a washing machine, a bench vice, a tool box lid, a scaffold pole — anywhere steel — and you have a work light pointing exactly where you need it, with both hands free.

That is also why the COB strip matters more than the spot on most jobs. A wide, soft flood at half a metre beats a tight hot spot that lights one bolt and blinds you with the reflection off it.

The part nobody tells you

Ignore the wattage numbers in the pictures

The maker’s own artwork for this lamp says “90 W XPE” and “80 W COB”. Those numbers are not real. A 68 g lamp running off a small built-in cell would be flat in seconds at 90 watts, and the same listing quotes a maximum of 300 lumens with a 4–6 hour runtime. The lumen figure is the one that describes what you will actually see, and it is the only output number we repeat.

300 lumens is a genuinely useful little lamp: plenty for a wheel change, a loft, a tent, a dark engine bay or a walk down an unlit lane. It is not a lamp for lighting a field, and nothing at this size and price is.

We have not measured the output or the runtime ourselves, and neither has anyone we can cite. Treat both as the maker’s claim.

Power

Built-in cell, charged over USB

The battery is inside the lamp and charges from anything with a USB port — a laptop, a phone charger, a power bank, a car socket. An indicator glows red while it charges and goes out when it is full, and the maker says you can run the light while it is plugged in.

Use the cable that comes in the box. The photograph here is the supplier’s only real picture of the kit, and the plug in it is micro-USB, while one of their computer renders draws a USB-C plug instead. We would rather flag that than have you throw the cable away and find your own does not fit.

Packs

One for the car, one for the shed, one that walks off

Every pack is the same lamp, each one boxed with its own strap and its own charging cable. The only differences are how many, and whether a zip case comes with them.

One headlamp on its strap with a USB charging cable

One headlamp

The lamp on its strap, plus a cable. Start here if you want to find out whether you like it before you commit the whole house to it.

Two headlamps with two USB charging cables

Two headlamps

The pairing most people end up wanting: one in the glovebox, one by the back door, and neither of them is ever the one that has walked off.

Five headlamps with five USB charging cables

Three or five

For households, crews, camper vans and anyone who has learned that torches migrate. Five is the cheapest way to make sure one is always where you are.

Two of the options add a small hard zip case that keeps one lamp and its cable together — worth it if the lamp lives in a rucksack or a tool bag rather than on a hook by the door. The larger of those two also throws in a little COB keychain light.

Straight answers

Five things we would rather you knew now

Rain, not rivers. The maker rates it IPX4, which covers splashes and rain from any direction. It is not a lamp to drop in a lake or wear in the shower, and there is no test certificate behind the number.

We cannot tell you what cell is inside. The specification sheet says NiMH; a marketing banner on the same listing says lithium. What we can say is that it is built in, it charges over USB, and it is not a lamp you can drop fresh AAAs into on a cold night.

The trim colour is not guaranteed. The supplier’s renders show an orange ring around the spot lens; their one real photograph shows red. Same lamp, same parts — we simply cannot promise which accent colour turns up.

The magnet is strong, and that cuts both ways. It holds the lamp on a bonnet or a bench, and it will also pick up swarf, grab a screwdriver you left nearby, and snap onto steel harder than you expect. Keep it away from cards with magnetic stripes.

It is a small light, honestly priced. No beam-distance figure, no IP68, no brand-name emitter. If you need a lamp to run a night shift on a building site, buy a branded one and pay several times as much. For a glovebox, a tackle box or a kitchen drawer, this is the size of thing that actually gets used.

Questions people ask

Before you order

Can I use it without the headband?

Yes — that is half the point of it. The lamp body comes out of the bracket and the magnet in the tail holds it to anything steel. It also sits flat on a table with the beam aimed forward.

Which socket does it charge from?

Keep the cable it ships with. The supplier’s real photograph of the kit shows a micro-USB plug; one of their renders shows USB-C, and we cannot tell from here which is in the box this month.

How bright is it, really?

The maker says up to 300 lumens. That is a useful close-range light — a shed, a tent, an engine bay, a path — not a searchlight. Ignore the “90 W” and “80 W” figures in their artwork; they are not real.

Can I change the battery?

No. The cell is built in and charges over USB. If you need a lamp that takes spare AAAs on a long trip, this is not it.

Will it survive rain?

Rain and splashes, yes — the maker rates it IPX4. Submersion, no. Dry it off afterwards, and do not plug it in to charge while it is still wet.

Does it fit a child?

The 40 cm elastic strap adjusts down a long way and the lamp weighs 68 g, so it sits fine on a smaller head. It is a light, not a toy — the beam is bright enough to be unpleasant looked at directly.

What is the keychain light in the biggest case pack?

A small COB light with a clip that the maker includes with that pack. We have no specification for it and do not sell it separately, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to choose that option.

Which pack should I buy?

One if you want to try it. Two if you have a car and a house. A case option if it will be carried in a bag. Three or five if you are kitting out a family, a crew or a camper van.
