Blue offset extension wrench driven by a ratchet at one end, with an adapter in the other end
Offset Extension Wrench — Drive Boxed-In Bolts From the Side, 5 Drive Adapters
Regular price $39.95

Offset extension wrench

Your ratchet stays where it fits. The socket goes where it doesn't.

Some bolts have something sitting right over them, so neither a ratchet nor a straight extension can come in along the bolt. If there's a slot beside it, this flat blue bar can slide in from the side: the socket sits on the bolt at one end, and your ratchet works out in the open at the other. It comes with five drive adapters, labeled 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in, for fitting different sockets.

Ratchet and sockets not included

Read this first: it works with your ratchet, it doesn't replace it.

In the box are the bar and five adapters. The ratchet and the sockets in the photos are not included.

No torque or impact rating is published. The supplier's listing calls it "impact", but gives no torque limit and no impact rating. Use it with a hand ratchet, and if a bolt is seized, don't force it through the bar: free it first, with penetrating oil or a breaker bar from whatever angle you can get one on it, then use this to run it out.

Illustration. Wrenches of this type usually carry the turn through a row of gears; the maker doesn't publish what's inside this one.

How it works

Turn one end, the other end turns the socket

Your ratchet goes into one end of the bar and the socket goes on the other, through an adapter. Turn the ratchet and the socket end turns too. Wrenches of this type normally turn the socket the same way as the ratchet, but the maker doesn't say so in writing, so give it a light test turn and watch the socket before you put any force on it.

Hold the bar steady with your other hand while you work the ratchet, as the maker's photos show; pulling on the ratchet tries to swing the bar around the bolt. You need room for the ratchet's swing and a hand on the bar, not room over the bolt, and you can turn the bar to any angle around the bolt to find a clear path.

Wrenches of this type usually carry the turn through a row of gears inside the bar; the maker doesn't say what's inside this one. It isn't a lever: one of the maker's photos calls it a "booster lever", but the bar's length adds no force. The torque at the bolt comes from your ratchet.

In the box

One bar, five adapters

The bar has a square drive hole at each end. The maker's drawing labels the adapters like this:

  • Sleeve, 25 mm long, labeled 3/8 in (9.5 mm). The maker doesn't say what it's for.
  • Adapter labeled 1/4 in (6.35 mm)
  • Adapter labeled 3/8 in (the drawing says 10 mm; 3/8 in is 9.5 mm)
  • Adapter labeled 1/2 in (the drawing says 12.5 mm; 1/2 in is 12.7 mm)
  • 1/2 in to 3/8 in reducer: a 1/2 in square hole on one end, a 3/8 in stud on the other

Three of the adapters are double-ended studs for fitting 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 in sockets to the bar, and the reducer lets a 1/2 in ratchet drive it. Nothing in the set takes a 1/4 in ratchet. The maker doesn't state the size of the bar's own holes; the adapters suggest 3/8 in.

Size

Measure the whole stack, not just the bar

The bar is 1.6 cm (0.63 in) thick by the maker's drawing. Over the bolt you also need room for the adapter and the socket stacked on the bar's end, so measure that whole height before you count on it fitting.

For the length, the same drawing says “25 cm / 15.4 inch”. Those two numbers don't agree: 25 cm is 9.8 in, and 15.4 in is 39 cm. We'll print the right figure once we've measured one.

Where it helps

Bolts with something sitting right over them

Any place where something blocks a socket on a straight extension from coming in along the bolt, but there's a slot beside it that the flat bar can slide through.

Under the hood

Bolts behind pulleys, brackets, hoses and the radiator, where there's no room to get a ratchet, or a ratchet and extension, onto the bolt at all.

Under the car

Fasteners above a crossmember or behind a heat shield, where there's room for a socket on the bolt and a slot to slide the bar through, but no room for a ratchet.

Other machines

Mowers, appliances and equipment where a panel or bracket sits over a nut and blocks a straight extension, but leaves a slot beside it.

Straight answers

Four things we'd rather you knew now

No ratchet, no sockets. The photos show a ratchet so you can see how the bar is used. You get the bar and the five adapters, and none of them takes a 1/4 in ratchet.

No torque figure, no impact rating. The maker publishes neither. Use it with a hand ratchet and steady hand pressure, no cheater pipe, and don't use it to break loose a seized bolt. The 1/2 in adapters let 1/2 in sockets fit; they don't make it a 1/2 in drive tool for strength, and the maker's photos that mention truck work come with no torque limit either.

It isn't a lever. The bar passes the ratchet's turn to the socket. Its length adds no force.

The length on the drawing is contradictory. It says 25 cm and 15.4 in at the same time. The thickness, 1.6 cm, is consistent.

Questions people ask

Before you order

Does it come with a ratchet or sockets?

No. You get the bar and five adapters. The ratchet in the photos is there to show how it's used.

Will it work with my ratchet?

The maker doesn't state the size of the bar's own holes. The adapters suggest 3/8 in: if so, a 3/8 in ratchet fits straight in, a 1/2 in ratchet fits through the 1/2-to-3/8 reducer, and 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in sockets fit through the double-ended adapters. Nothing in the set takes a 1/4 in ratchet. We'll confirm the hole size once we've measured one.

Can I use it with an impact wrench or a power ratchet?

The maker publishes no impact rating and no torque limit, so we wouldn't, and the same goes for impact drivers, drills and cordless or air ratchets. Use a hand ratchet.

Can I use it with a torque wrench?

Not for final torque on anything that matters. The maker publishes no torque limit and doesn't say how much of the turn is lost to friction inside the bar, so the bolt may not get what your torque wrench reads. Do the final tightening of wheel, brake, suspension and steering fasteners with the torque wrench directly on the bolt.

Will it break loose a rusted bolt?

Don't use it for that. With no published torque limit, forcing a seized bolt through the bar risks the parts inside. Free the bolt first (penetrating oil, or a breaker bar if you can get one on it), then use the extension to run it out where the ratchet can't swing.

How long is it?

The maker's drawing gives two lengths that don't agree, 25 cm and 15.4 in. We'll update this once we've measured one. The bar is 1.6 cm (0.63 in) thick.
