Firewood Splitter Drill Bit Kit

  • Square, round and hex shanks in the box

A threaded steel cone that screws into a log and pushes it apart along the grain.

Which size

Firewood rounds up to about 15 cm (6 in) across.

Put the axe down

Split firewood with your drill.

Swinging an axe is slow work and hard on your back. Run this cone into a log and the thread pulls it in and forces the wood apart, while all you do is hold the drill.

  • 3 shanks included
  • 32 or 42 mm
  • High-carbon steel

How it splits

The thread pulls, the cone pushes.

The tip bites into the wood and the deep thread screws the cone in on its own. As it goes deeper the cone gets wider, so it wedges the fibers apart until the log cracks along the grain. You steer the drill; you do not have to push hard.

  • The thread does the pulling

Once the tip bites, the cone screws itself into the log; you keep the drill straight.

  • Splits along the grain

The cone widens as it goes in and wedges the wood apart along its natural lines.

  • Fits the drill you own

Three shanks screw into the cone: square, round or hex, depending on your drill.

Dense, wet or knotty wood takes longer and needs more drill.

How to use it

Fit, line up, let it pull.

Which shank: square for a rotary hammer, round for a hammer drill, hex for a regular drill
  1. Pick the shank

Square for a rotary hammer, round for a hammer drill, hex for a regular drill chuck.

  2. Screw it together

Thread the shank into the cone and tighten it, then fit it to the drill.

  3. Start slow and straight

Rest the log on the ground or against a block, never in your hand. Set the drill to a low speed and keep the bit straight into the wood.

  4. Let it pull itself in

Keep light pressure and let the thread draw the cone in until the log splits. If it binds, stop the drill and back it out.

Wear gloves and eye protection, keep loose sleeves away from the spinning cone, and use a drill with a side handle if it has one.
